I am a registered counsellor, teacher and an NDIS support coordinator. The qualities I value in others such as honesty, kindness, empathy, tolerance, acceptance and inclusivity are those which underpin my professional practice. Counselling approaches are person-centred, strengths-based and treatment plans are developed collaboratively in response to the needs and preferences of each individual seeking support. Approaches can include (but are not restricted to) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-Based Treatments, and Neuro-psychotherapy. I also have a keen interest in animal assisted therapies, increased rural mental health service provision, and supports for those affected by suicide. Training in my Masters’ Level (Counselling) degree included supporting those affected by grief and loss, neuro-psychotherapy, CBT / ACT and professional and ethical practices.
During a career spanning over 30 years, I have worked within government and public sectors to provide a variety of supports to individuals with disabilities and their significant others. In the years prior to Queensland’s transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, my roles have included Special Needs teacher at both State run and independent schools, co-facilitating adult literacy and numeracy, co-ordinating disability services in Family Day Care and respite care schemes, volunteering with Lifeline and Anglicare and community based recovery, including participation in natural disaster recovery teams.
I see the most recent changes to the way in which people access disability supports as opening up greater opportunities for individuals and their families to genuinely exercise greater choice and control by tailoring their supports to meet their unique needs and interests. As an NDIS support coordinator, it is my privilege and pleasure to share some of that journey as we work together to identify, explore and create options to establish optimal supports which enhance each individual’s quality of life through increased engagement and enjoyment.
